International Aid

Acting in crisis situations and providing long-term relief

The International Aid of Red Cross Luxembourg supports the victims of conflicts and natural disasters. Currently, it intervenes mainly during disasters due to climate change and helps the most vulnerable, first and foremost women and children, in crisis situations. It also provides long-term relief.

Help across borders

Floods and droughts

Two of the curses against which international aid is regularly deployed are floods and droughts in Africa. Indeed, when houses are destroyed or the situation is too precarious, populations are forced to migrate. They therefore find themselves homeless and unprotected. Among these populations, women are the ones most at risk of violence, especially sexual violence, as well as their children.

Helping vulnerable families

In addition to single women with children, International Aid targets other populations that are vulnerable: large families, elderly people or people, heads of household, with an illness or disabilities, etc.

Most of these people are settled in rural areas with very fragile dwellings in remote and difficult to access areas, without any assistance. In view of the humanitarian challenges linked to growing urbanization, the Luxembourg Red Cross is also called upon to work in urban areas, a development focus for the coming years in order to accompany the mass exodus of people to the cities.

Housing specialist

International Aid intervenes in crisis areas throughout the world with a particular commitment to the African continent, where it is mainly active in Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Cameroon, Burundi and Chad. In addition, it is also active in Ukraine and Nepal.

In collaboration with humanitarian partners, including the IFRC Shelter Research Unit, it improves the housing and infrastructure of vulnerable populations through its programmes. We also assess the needs of victims, research and develop appropriate shelter solutions, and train professionals.

Enabling independent living

When a disaster occurs, specially trained members of Red Cross Luxembourg can be deployed within 48 hours anywhere in the world. This emergency team, Emergency Response Unit (ERU) Relief Benelux, will participate in the process of distributing relief material to the victims.

The Red Cross was created in a war context to provide rapid and indiscriminate assistance to the wounded on the battlefield. However, in view of the chronic nature of crisis, Red Cross Luxembourg also participates in the reconstruction phase in order to improve people’s living conditions on a more sustainable basis and to strengthen their resilience in the face of crisis and enable them to live independently.

Promoting humanitarian principles in luxembourg

International Aid is also responsible for promoting international humanitarian law and its values in the Grand Duchy. Through workshops and various events, it encourages humanitarian education of the population and young people in particular. It raises awareness on the fundamental principles of the Red Cross and encourages responsible behaviour with a view to contributing to a fairer world.
