On Monday, Benelux, our Emergency Response Unit, coordinated the distribution of emergency shelters, sanitary kits, and jerry cans, which transport drinking water to victims of the typhoon. The unit helped 500 families throughout the day around the town of Bogo which lies in the North-East of Cebu province.

Marc Crochet, Deputy General Director of the Luxembourg Red Cross explains, « Our team brings expertise and support to volunteers and professionals at the Philippine Red Cross. Our Luxembourgish Volunteer, Luc Stoffel, and his four colleagues arrived last Saturday and immediately began to organise the distribution of aid. They will be transferred to Iloilo on Panay Island on Tuesday, where they will manage the logistics for aid distribution »

Le trajet de notre Equipe ERU BeneluxPanay Island is part of Capiz province, where more than 100 000 families have been affected by the catastrophe. 17 000 homes have been destroyed in the province and a further 69 000 homes were badly damaged.

Deploying our Emergency Response Unit is one of the actions taken by the Luxembourg Red Cross to help with the catastrophe.

Marc Crochet details: « We are very lucky to be part of an extremely well organised plan. Last week, the federation of the Red Cross created a list of material and human needs to effectively help victims in the Philippines. We are funding plastic covers for emergency shelters. The world stock for these covers was completely depleted in 48 hours, therefore, we are organising further manufacturing in Asia and their direct delivery to the Philippines. Furthermore, we have directly donated 150 000 euros to the Philippine Red Cross to help with their immediate needs. This will help to buy and bring food, sanitary kits and other basic essentials to the victims. A further 100 000 euros will co-finance the intervention of teams from the International Committee of the Red Cross on the Island of Samar. In total, 70 million euros are necessary to provide aid to the victims over the course of 18 months. We appeal to the people of Luxembourg to help us to do more »
